Customer Reviews
The Bakers: Jean has been an amazing trainer and friend for our family and our german shepherd puppy, Rex, and we cannot recommend her highly enough!! We are convinced that our puppy thinks that Jean is her best friend, and the most amazing person ever. We appreciated how dedicated she was to making the training program fun for the dog, effective, and also tailored to our individual needs.
Jean was incredibly responsive to our questions, any day of the week, and helped us work through all of our puppy frustrations with constructive solutions. She was punctual, flexible to work with our crazy schedule, and we felt comfortable with her from day one. At one point, our pup was scared of getting in and out of the car, so Jean went so far as to even jump in the backseat of the car and demonstrate how to work through Rex's fears.
We are expecting our first child this summer, and look forward to working with her again, this time with both of our dogs as we welcome our baby into our home!

Annie Grossman, owner of School For The Dogs, has been helping dogs and their humans live happily together in New York City and beyond since 2011.
She started her career as a journalist, writing about people, lifestyles, and trends. Her interest in dog training was sparked by an article she wrote for The New York Times in 2007, which focused on people who chose dog training as a 'Plan B' career. She was discouraged by the lack of reputable training programs at the time and felt that the dog training industry was 'brimming with charlatans who could be doing more harm than good.'
A few years later, she decided to pursue her passion for dog training and enrolled in the Karen Pryor Academy (KPA) Dog Trainer Professional program. She is now a Certified Training Partner (CTP) with KPA and a Certified Professional Dog Trainer - Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA) with the Certification Council For Professional Dog Trainers.
Annie is also the author of the book, How To Train Your Dog With Love + Science, which is being published by Sourcebooks in September 2024.

Jennifer Lea Reed first became interested in animal behavior as a journalist. In 2004, she graduated from the inaugural class of the ASCPA’s Dog Training Program in NYC and founded Big Apple Dog School. In 2006, she earned national credentials as a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA). And after more than a decade of offering group classes, private training, behavior consultations and seminars on everything from puppies to aggression, Jennifer decided to specialize in one of the most difficult areas of behavior modification — canine separation anxiety. In 2016, she became the only New York City trainer at the time to be credentialed as a Certified Separation Anxiety Trainer (CSAT). And while she always conducted training in the most humane way possible, in 2021 Jennifer officially was certified as a fear-free trainer.
Jennifer Lea Reed's training philosophy is strongly rooted in positive reinforcement. For teaching new behaviors, she uses a reward system that encourages the dog to offer and repeat a desired behavior while using instructive correction to stop an unwanted behavior. Training is not complete until the rewards have been faded out.
For separation anxiety specifically, the approach needs to be modified as it’s not realistic or effective to try to reward the dog for relaxing in the owner’s absence. In this case, science-based, best-practices training relies on desensitization.

Renee D. - I first e-mailed three or four trainers. Of everyone I contacted, Jennifer wrote back immediately. The other trainers didn't show much interest in us. They just kept telling us how hard separation anxiety is to treat, which really isn't helpful when you've got a dog who has it. Jennifer explained how the treatment works, and that it could go very slowly at times. But she sent us additional materials the next day, and we were sold. We had a couple of setbacks in the following months, but nothing like what we had dealt with before on a daily basis. Jennifer really gave us the tools we needed. As a testament to Sophie's success, my husband finally took an antique carpet down from the wall and laid it on the floor! Now that's confidence! Thank you, Jennifer!
Sharon P. and Vicki L. - We didn’t know how to help Jake, so we just stayed home. We used daycare for when we were at work, but at night we wouldn’t leave the house. We were prisoners. We loved Jake and it was painful to think we could give up on him, but we were at the end of our rope. And it was starting to affect our relationship, too. We had no hope, but our daycare manager said she knew a trainer who could help us and put us in touch with Jennifer. Treating Jake’s separation anxiety wasn’t easy, and it took six months. But there was a night where we were able to actually go out to dinner together leaving Jake at home, and we realized it was the first time we had done that in five years. Thank you, Jennifer!
Jennifer F. and Joel A. - We can't thank Jennifer enough for teaching all of us how to live together peacefully and happily. She is a wonderful, warm and patient teacher. Living with a dog with separation anxiety is a very stressful situation, but from the beginning she reduced the stress and focused us on fixing the problem. It wasn't easy, but it all made sense and we could see the improvement. The best part was watching Max's old video and seeing how far he'd come. We are forever grateful to her.
Alex C. - Jennifer, thank you for everything! Gertie is so much more confident and sparky, and we really feel like we understand her and can read her better than we ever could before. We will continue your good work and everything we've learned along the way. We always felt she was special, but you’ve helped develop her into an even lovelier dog! Thank you!

Samantha Schmidt
Samantha Schmidt is a long-time animal lover who grew up in NYC with 2 Great Danes, a boxer, 3 sisters and her parents. She attended Convent of the Sacred Heart where instead of sports- she walked dogs as a business all through high school. In those years, she built quite a business and knowledge of animals. She learned what things worked, what did not work and how to “read” the dogs that she walked.
She went on to Tulane, where she started to study animal behavior and train dogs. She found that she was able to enhance the communication between a dog and its family. She also found she was able to adjust the expectations of the human family. She realized how rewarding this work was – and has never stopped. This means she has been training dogs and people since 1985 and she still loves it just as much as she did on day one. She learns something new from every dog and every owner. Dogs are live, individual beings; therefore, one method does not apply to every dog. People vary just as much, and she searches to find a productive way to instruct each individual owner as well.
Training Philosophy
Samantha Schmidt believes that every dog and owner is different and that one method does not apply to every dog. She searches to find a productive way to instruct each individual owner as well. Her goal is for your dog to be a safe and polite member of your household so you can enjoy him or her to the fullest. Well-behaved dogs are welcome more places. Keeping your dog safe requires balance and harmony in your relationship.

“Instinct completely changed my relationship with my dog (for the better). “As a board-certified veterinary behaviorist, one of the things I see commonly in my practice is family dogs biting, or almost biting, the kids in the home. Thankfully, most dog-to-kid bites are extremely preventable once families are empowered with some basic dog-and-kid safety principles, smart management techniques, and positive relationship-building activities. And that’s great news, because as a mom and dog owner, I know how special those dog-and-kid relationships can be when everyone feels safe and supported.”

“My whole family is so grateful to Instinct – Momo the dog included! We have been boarding our dear, crazy dog intermittently over the last two months while my husband recovers from an emergency surgery. The kindness and breadth of dog knowledge that all the Instinct specialists possess has been so reassuring during this very hectic time. Mom now insists on walking by the Instinct fence on all her walks because she love this place so much.”

“We've been using Elena's services as a trainer and a sitter since we brought our puppy Chase home 9 months ago. She is very knowledgeable and loving, and her training methods have proven to be very successful. We have such faith in Elena that she is the only one with whom we have left Chase while we've traveled.”
– Michele S.
“I have always been somewhat particular about the dog walkers that I use, especially when living in a city. With that said, IADL has been fantastic. They are always on time, caring, and around lunch time, my dog is super excited and waiting for her walker to show up. I highly recommend their services!”
–Timothy C.
“We have been working with Elena from It's a Dog's Life, LLC for the past month on training our dog, Pasha, who is a jack russell terrier and we could not be happier with the results so far! The tips and techniques that Elena has taught us range from minor tweaks that we could make to our at-home habits (which yielded some instant results) to daily training exercises to more long-term changes to our habits. The results have been amazing! We are really looking forward to continuing our training with Elena and could not more highly recommend her services!”
–Anita G.
“It's a Dog's Life was and is a savior. I think I was more nervous about getting a puppy than I was to have kids but Elena was nurturing even before we got our dog and has been a fantastic trainer since then. Her responsiveness and dedication to her clients (human and canine) is unparalleled. We also use her dog walking services and all look forward to the detailed reports from our dog's daily walks.”
–Debra R.
“We have two attention needy cats who are quite sure they aren't members of the feline race at all and belong on royal thrones in a palace. Elena's staff have cat-sitted for us on many occasions. Each and every member of her team is responsible, trustworthy, animal loving, and treats our babes with the same tender love and care they are used to getting when we are around. When I used to leave my cats with other sitters, they're coats looked dull when I returned and I could tell they weren't eating properly. That is not the case with it's a Dog's Life! I highly recommend Elena and It's a Dog's Life to anyone who needs someone to look after their pets.”
–Lisa H.
“Elena and the whole team at It's A Dog's Life NYC provide a loving, caring, and safe environment for our beloved Labrador Tyler. We have complete confidence in their ability to meet the changing needs of our dog and our respective work schedules. From taking our dog to the vet, to consulting on nutrition, and everything in between, Elena and her team provide an invaluable service to our family.”
–Elizabeth W.
“I've been using It's a Dog's Life's services for 2+ years for my two dogs and they are extremely professional and knowledgeable. Their dog walkers are great, always on time and deliver exactly the service you're expecting. I'm definitely a demanding customer and I expect to get the services and performance I pay for and I am very happy that I chose It's a Dog's Life (I'm pretty sure my dogs are pretty happy with that decision as well).”
–Michael D.
“It's A Dog's Life has seen us through sick doggies, puppy training and sibling rivalry, and we've never received anything but the most conscientious, professional and loving care. When you're as nuts about your animals as we are, it takes extraordinary caregivers to make you feel totally comfortable. That's how we always feel with It's A Dog's Life!”
–Jerome and Sarah L.
“From my first conversation with Elena, I knew I'd found the right people to take care of my new addition. I grew up with pets always around, but raising a puppy in the city presents its own set of unique challenges. I had a million questions, and Elena and the IADL staff were instantly supportive and encouraging. From separation anxiety to crate training to pet service providers, their advice has proven invaluable. Set your dog up with IADL. Until your dog learns how to say thank you, the pictures you're sent on their visits will show you just how happy they are.”
–Jon M.
“It's a Dog's Life is the best thing that could have happened to us! We moved into our building not knowing who would walk our Boston terrier Murray. Then we met Elena and her team and we were so impressed. Not only do they walk our dog every day, but they work with him on his behavior skills. They also leave a daily report card which details everything they did on their walk. We even had them stay with Murray over a long weekend while we were away. All in all we love their service, but most of all so does Murray!”
–Allison B.
“We have been thrilled with the service and reliability that It's A Dogs Life has provided us. The staff is friendly and professional. Whether it is a walk, training, play session or an overnight stay, the service is impeccable. Each and every staff member has passionately cared for Joey as if she was their own. We're very grateful for the positive impact It's A Dogs Life has had on the development of Joey. Thank you for all you've done!”

“It's a Dogs Life has brought us piece of mind. While we are both at work, we know that Toby is receiving the best care possible. The staff treat Toby like he's one of their family. They leave us detailed notes outlining the important moments of the day, send pictures of his walks and play dates and check in on him when he's not feeling well. Toby just loves his walkers and they have made him such a happy well-adjusted puppy!”
–Eric & Scott
“Elena and her team of pet care specialists are outstanding! I highly recommend them for your personalized pet care and training needs. They were there every step of the way when my eight week old Labrador puppy Siyeh came home with us to Manhattan. There is no way to describe the sense of comfort that I have knowing IADL will be there on-time to exercise my dog with a committed team that focuses on my pet in a very safe and professional manner.”

“I feel so fortunate to have found Elena and her wonderful service. I live on the Upper East Side and have two small dogs that absolutely love their walks and play time not to mention the peace of mind that it gives our family. For the first time since I brought my dog's home almost 7 years ago, I feel that I can leave the city without worry, knowing they are in the best care with Elena and her staff.”

“It's A Dog's Life is a great service. I have used them for everything–overnight care while on vacation, regular walks, and training walks. They are very loving towards your pets, provide great training as well as helpful 'parent' tips and are prompt, reliable and professional. I would highly recommend them to anyone.”

Training Philosophy
Doggone Special's mission is to teach people how to better understand and communicate with their dogs using our humane, force-free dog training method so they can live in harmony and lead happier lives together.
We believe to better prepare and train dogs to live with us, we need to have more empathy for them. Our dogs have been brought into our homes and the human world often with our expectation that they should know our rules and etiquette. We may get annoyed or angry when they behave in ways that we don't like such as barking, jumping, chewing, mouthing, or digging. It's important to recognize that these are very natural and normal dog behaviors. From their perspective, they aren't doing something "wrong" or being "bad", they are just being DOGS! With this in mind, punishing or reprimanding our dogs really isn't fair, especially when they don't speak our language and can't understand why we don't like certain behaviors they do. This is why we adhere to positive reinforcement dog training and behavior modification. With positive reinforcement, we can get polite, well behaved dogs without resorting to punishment or coercion.

Samantha Schmidt believes that every dog and owner is different. Some clients need a lot of help and some just need some fine tuning/guidance. Her goal is for your dog to be a safe and polite member of your household so you can enjoy him or her to the fullest. Well-behaved dogs are welcome more places. Keeping your dog safe requires balance and harmony in your relationship. She works in many households with children of all ages, children of all ages and all types of people.
Services
Samantha Schmidt offers dog training services in New York City. She provides initial consultations that are 60 - 90 minutes long. During the consultation, she will ask you a lot of questions, you can ask her a lot of questions and she will get to know your dog. She will observe and work with the dog(s) and make recommendations based on her observations. Then she will work with your dog so you can see what your dog can do! All of the dogs she works with love the training sessions. If she comes across a problem that she thinks is best handled by someone else, she will refer you. She takes pride in being successful in her work. She has a vast knowledge of dogs, life in NYC, the many services that exist in the animal world and the variety of equipment used in training. She reads every book on every different method so you do not have to. She is very sensitive to how short people’s time can be in this city so she makes the most out of every session. She gives homework at the end of the sessions and work at the pace of the dog and the owner.

“Best trainer! Patient, dedicated, and reachable.
Trainers I worked with in the past were never available when i needed it or had a question. Not Justis, she is prompt and extremely courteous. She transformed my terrier rescue, Maxwell, from a leash reactive terror (barking and lunging at dogs big and small) to an attentive student, who gets complimented on his manners and can pass dogs and greet a dog when appropriate. Justis creates a plan for you and your dog. Training is work, so be prepared to do your homework. Maxwell wouldn’t be where he is today without Raise the Woof!”

"Erica is an amazing, thorough, caring, and compassionate trainer. Erica listens to her client's concerns and immediately sets up a foolproof sustainable plan. Rest assured, at the end of her sessions, Erica manages to give her clients the knowledge and tools required to help both the owner and the dog(s). Erica loves animals and will do anything she can to help them and their owners, she continues to follow up because she cares deeply about the outcome. She is genuinely here to help the animals and her communication and commitment are unparalleled."

"When we first adopted our rescue dog, Mr. Boo, we were in need of a trainer to set us up for success and help him learn his basic commands. Erica was incredibly thorough with us, even staying far later than our scheduled training time to work with us in our home. She had endless tips and tricks when it came to methods for getting our pup to grasp harder concepts, and I would definitely recommend her to anyone looking for quality, compassionate training for their dog."
Elysee Inzunza
"Erica was a lifesaver. We were new dog owners who felt in over our heads, and through a VC and two in-person meetings, she helped get us on the right track on training our 1 yo rescue pup. Erica has a gentle authority that our dog responded to immediately. With her help and guidance, we've made a ton of progress on our dog's walking and in-home skills, and we're looking for to working with Erica even more."
Matt C.
"Even though my dog is 95% perfect, I needed Erica to help me work on the remaining 5%. Erica taught me how to teach my dog, which ultimately is the most important tool. Erica is kind but firm, patient and consistent. She used positive reinforcement with my dog and made it fun for him! He is a happier dog now with structure and guidance in his life. We will continue to practice and refine our new skills and tools on our own and with Erica. "
Charlène v.S.
"Erica has been an invaluable resource to us and our pup, Jamie. After living a few months in the suburbs, Jamie's behavior has deteriorated: She is very difficult to handle while on walks and will consistently lunge and bark at approaching people or dogs. We had just one session with Erica and we already see improvement! Erica encouraged us to go back to the basics with Jamie, create more structure and build back trust. Erica recommended that we use the clicker while on walks to help divert her attention away from approaching people or dogs and so that she's focused on us instead. Jamie was ready to work and was much less likely to focus on the 'scary' environment around her. We are so grateful for Erica's guidance and we now have hope that Jamie can live comfortably again in the city!"
Bobby and Julie
"I started lessons with Erica because our 6 month old German Shepherd Athena was fearful of other dogs and people. She would also lunge and jump at runners, bicycles and cars going by. Erica broke down Athena's issues and patiently resolved them. Not only did she teach Athena to be confident and look to us to respond but she taught us how to be more confident in handling Athena's issues. We are truly grateful for all her training and wisdom. "

"We want to thank Erica of Salinas K9 Training for sharing her time and expertise for the rescue dogs in our care. Erica provides detailed, individualized in person visits to help our dogs and teach better communicate with our rescue animals. Erica sends an extensive follow up plan with what was discussed, areas to target for training, as well as tools to assist and promote our dogs success which is incredibly helpful. We highly recommend her services to anyone interested in professional dog training!"
Meagan Kobielski, Founder & Executive Director at strongpawsrescue.org
Although growing up around dogs my whole life, enrolling them in a training program was something we never considered. Fry came to us from a rescue organization and presented with high anxiety towards humans and dogs, as he would often bark and lunge at them. After assessing Fry, Erica explained the triggers and signs our dog was communicating, unbeknownst to us. She prescribed a plan to work out Fry's issues through confidence-building as well as helping us to effectively communicate with him. He has since flourished when taking him on walks as well as when guests come over. It was truly an eye-opener to learn from Erica and to see the tremendous growth in our dog. Thank you so much Erica for your love and dedication, as well as your expertise, to help our family!
Andrew C.
It has been so incredible working with Erica. My 4 year old, 70lb, American Staffy mix was new to the city and afraid of just about everything. His anxiety meant hypervigilant walks and randomly jumping up on people or lunging at other dogs. As someone who has a lot of experience working with difficult dogs (dog sitting and fostering), I really appreciated how thorough Erica was on explaining behaviors and how to best support my dog. She is so patient and warm in her approach and offers guidance that can be applied to various behaviors/challenges. But it's not just changing behaviors, it's building trust and confidence in my relationship with my dog. We've made so much progress and our walks are so much easier and calmer (for both of us!). It really is about providing the best life for my dog and less about just making his behaviors go away. I absolutely recommend Erica to anyone hoping to build an even stronger bond with their dog and creating a happy, less stressful life for both of you!
Michelle Chen
Erica has been fundamental in building my confidence as a first time dog owner, as well as setting me up for success to help my dog build HER confidence as a fearful, anxious dog. Millie was rescued from the south, so getting her used to the city has been a big adjustment for her. Erica has taught me how to build Millie's confidence through obedience, enrichment, structure, and exposure to the city in a positive way. Millie is a completely different dog now that she has these things in her daily routine. She is calmer, more fulfilled, feels safer, and is most importantly happier. Erica has happily and thoroughly answered my quite literally hundreds of questions and taught me so much about dog behavior. She has been so encouraging in my journey of being a first time dog owner and Millie and I would not be where we are today if it weren't for her!
