Insight Animal Behavior Services

Insight Animal Behavior Services is a veterinary behavior practice that was founded by Dr. Kelly Ballantyne, a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists. Dr. Ballantyne grew up on the North Shore of Chicago and has been a lifelong animal lover. She graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 2001 and earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2005. After 4 years in general practice, she started a non-traditional residency with the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists (ACVB) under the mentorship of Dr. John Ciribassi. Dr. Ballantyne earned her board certification through ACVB in 2015. Additionally, she worked at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine for 10 years, establishing the College's first behavior service.

Training Philosophy

Insight Animal Behavior Services' mission is to help improve your dog or cat's quality of life and help you to build a healthy relationship with them based on better understanding of their motivations, consistent guidance, and kindness.

Services

Insight Animal Behavior Services offers a variety of services, including:

  • Intake Assessments: These are held virtually over Zoom and allow the team to gain a thorough understanding of the issues your dog or cat is struggling with. Prior to this appointment, you will fill out a detailed behavior questionnaire and have your primary care veterinarian send your pet's records. During this one hour appointment, you will discuss your primary concerns in depth with one of the behavior consultants. They will offer management suggestions to assist you until your Veterinary Behavior Evaluation.
  • Veterinary Behavior Evaluation: This appointment is held in-person at the clinic with one of the veterinarians. They will incorporate the information obtained during the intake appointment with this veterinary behavior evaluation, which includes review of your pet's medical history, observation of your pet's behavior, a physical examination (if safe to perform), and diagnostic plan. Next, they'll review your pet's diagnosis and prognosis with you and work with you to set up a treatment plan to help you reach your goals.
  • Follow-up Consultations: These are held with the Insight vet that conducted your pet's Veterinary Behavior Evaluation. They may be conducted in-person or over video conference or phone. These appointments allow the vets to evaluate your dog or cat's response to the treatment plan and adjust accordingly for continued progress. Follow up evaluations are typically scheduled every 3 months following the veterinary behavior evaluation early in the course of treatment to ensure continued progress towards your goals. Once your pet's behavior has stabilized, follow up consultations should be scheduled every 6 months or management of your pet's treatment and prescription medications can be transferred back to your primary care veterinarian.
  • Vet to Vet Teleconsultations: This service is available to veterinarians around the world. If you are a veterinarian that would like to discuss the use of medical therapy for one of your behavior patients, have a behavior patient that needs immediate triage, or would like to expand your behavior medicine skillset, contact Insight to schedule a Vet to Vet teleconsultation.
  • Human Support Services: Insight offers a free, 90 minute support group facilitated by Valerie Bogie, a Behavior Consultant and the Administrative Manager for Insight Animal Behavior Services. Support group meetings take place once a month. The goal is to offer support around the emotions, stressors, and impacts of having a pet with behavior challenges. Insight also offers 1:1 Support Sessions, which are a safe space where you are able to share and be heard by someone who understands your situation with your pet. Valerie is certified in Emotional CPR and earned a Veterinary Human Support Certificate at the University of Tennessee Knoxville. These Support Sessions are available to anyone and you do not need to be an Insight client to schedule.

Lana Brucker

US

Lana Brucker

Lana Brucker first moved to New York City in October 2014 with dreams of becoming a Broadway star. She studied musical theatre, auditioned a lot, and booked an occasional gig. A huge animal lover, she started volunteering at the ASPCA to cope with the stress of the entertainment industry and give back to the community. Soon after starting volunteer work, she decided to pet-sit as a side job to her acting career. Before she knew it, she was spending most of her time with animals and walking away from national tour opportunities to rescue the love of her life, a cat named Olly, from North Shore Animal League. What started as a hobby and side hustle quickly turned into a new dream as Lana was able see the impact she could have on animals, especially those suffering from anxiety.
In 2016, Lana decided to go back to school with the goal of becoming an animal behavior specialist. At Hunter College, she studied psychology, animal behavior, conservation, and economics. She also completed a cat-human play internship in the Reiss lab with scientist Julie Hecht. As a student, Lana steadily built animal care clientele and dreamt about starting her own animal behavior business one day. Even after the pandemic hit, she still obtained some work with animals, both in shelter and home settings. After graduate school, Lana decided to take her skill to the next level by studying dog training in Karen Pryor Academy's top rated Dog Trainer Professional Program. During this time, she also earned her Fear Free Shelters certification, dedicating to minimize fear, anxiety, and stress among dogs and cats.
In 2021, Lana's dream business started coming to fruition. As a result of the pandemic, pet ownership rates had hit a record high. It was the perfect time to start a companion animal behavior business. Lana recognized the fear, anxiety, and stress among both people and animals struggling to adapt to unpredictable safety restrictions. Seeing a great need for comfort, Lana decided to name her business Lana's Comforting Pawsibilities. Now, Lana's Comforting Pawsibilities is serving clients in person in the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania and New York City areas as well as virtually nationwide.

Training Philosophy

Lana uses force-free, positive reinforcement behavior modification methods and low-stress handling techniques. She recommends a combination of management, training, and enrichment tailored to each individual animal. Substantial scientific research demonstrates that giving animals choice, control, and enjoyable experiences not only supports their welfare but also hastens the change we want to see in their behavior. This positive energy is good for both pet and pet caregiver alike. Therefore, Lana makes sure to provide a safe, supportive space for people to gain confidence alongside their furry companions.

Customer Reviews

Hema S
It was awesome to work with Lana Brucker! I have worked with her for 5 months and seen incredible results.
I turned to her for help with my one-year-old golden doodle Kiko. She had been the sweetest, most affectionate puppy, and it was like she became a totally different dog after her spay. She was behaving aggressively to my other dog, who is much smaller than her, and to the people in my house due to resource guarding. She was very reactive, making walks and even leaving the house extremely difficult, and was completely unmanageable to handle. After several injuries incurred trying to control her outside, I was ready to admit I had no idea how to deal with her anxiety. Her vet even suggested seeing a veterinary behaviorist for long term anxiety medication, even though she was barely one.
I was impressed with Lana's website and positive, compassionate training methods, and we held a virtual consultation. I was struck by how thoroughly she took notes and didn't miss covering a single detail. Throughout the virtual course, she was very dedicated and committed to addressing every issue we faced, even when new ones cropped up.
She was highly flexible when I needed more time between classes, and when I asked for more detailed instructions to help me learn the techniques, she sent me comprehensive summaries as well as the zoom recording of our sessions. She also was very organized, taking notes during our sessions, and telling me in advance how to prepare for the next session.
Lana was as helpful for me and my family as she was my dogs! Always in a calm, positive way, she encouraged me to work on my own anxiety to help my dog handle hers. We even did some calming warm up exercises for ME at the start of sessions, to help gradually ease my fear of Kiko's reactivity! Thanks to Lana, I stopped being afraid of my dog and learned to understand and love her even more!
When a circumstance arose in which I needed to leave home for a week, I took the opportunity to board Kiko with her for a week of training, a second course. She was so warm and welcoming to my dog, who had immense separation issues, that she even let her sleep in her bed! Kiko warmed up her to immediately, and happily enjoyed her week of training and extra yummy treats. She taught my highly reactive dog, who used to be difficult to walk in quiet suburbs, how to navigate complex scenarios like city streets and meeting people, in a way that was empathetic to my dog's anxiety. By the end of the week, Kiko was much more comfortable with people, and even looked forward to meeting them! Lana then explained in detail to me how she had dealt with Kiko, so I could transfer those skills to life at home.
Since then, Kiko has been much easier to handle. She walks loose leash, and passes dogs, people, and loud distractions with confidence, sometimes without a single reaction! She is very warm with my other dog, and by using the ideas Lana gave us, we can eliminate incidents between the two. Lana helped restore my entire family's peace of mind, and we are incredibly grateful! Kiko has also calmed down as we have learned to help her better, and we rarely need to use calming/Cbd supplements anymore.
I want to point out two specific changes that happened due to our work with Lana. In the consultation, Lana explained how she wanted Kiko to be able to turn to me in times of distress, so I could help her. I had no illusions of this ever happening; once Kiko reacted, we could never reach her. Now, Kiko looks at me when she sees something she isn't sure about. My mom blew a whistle once, which Kiko had never heard before, and Kiko turned to look at me! I couldn't resist sharing her incredible progress to everyone I knew!
Another amazing improvement: when we would pass a dog on the other side of the street, she used to bark and lunge until the dog was out of sight. Recently, she looked at the dog calmly and actually sat down looking at me to wait for a treat! I was so surprised as I was prepared to walk away as fast as possible, and she just looked at me with sweet, trusting eyes and enjoyed her treat instead!
Above all, Lana was a cheerful, calm person to work with. She never got frustrated, nor said a single critical comment. Her wonderful, compassionate attitude helped change our approach to dealing with difficult moments. She would always remind us with a smile, to use a happy, positive tone even when we were the most frustrated. This has been a truly helpful attitude to adopt, in dealing not only with Kiko, but regular life as well!
I'm so glad I could learn from Lana. Thank you so much for giving us our cuddly, loving dog back! As we continue to make progress with Kiko, I'm sure we will be turning to Lana for more guidance.

Review: Kate has been an amazing dog trainer. She is approachable, understanding to issues that people have with their pups, and offers several methods of working to remediate.
I have taken her handler clinic series and have done one on one training. In her courses, I have always walked away with a new technique or skill with my dog handling that I have not been taught before. Kate has helped me learn several steps to working on my pet handling skills and offered resources to help build practices with my dog.
Not to forget to mention, her classes are fun! We do activities, each person gets to showcase the training and it is in new environments. I highly recommend taking Kate's courses with your dog, she is insightful, supportive and the course are unique!
We have always had an interest in getting Zeke into fields and watching his genetics shine in the bird dog world, but it can be intimidating as a total newbie. Kate is a very approachable way to get acclimated and we are so lucky to have met her!
She talks about learning theory and focuses the 'work' on the handler; helping the human half of the team understand what they are doing and how the dog's behavior is impacted. It is so refreshing to hear a trainer discuss the vast differences in dogs and their learning needs and approach training with this lens.
The bird dog world feels less scary with her as a guide!

With 30 years in the business, the focus remains on the bond between dogs and their human companions. As a reinforcement-based trainer, emphasis is placed on structure, guidance, and boundaries to set up the household for success. This process prevents the rehearsal of unwanted behaviors while providing ample opportunities for reinforcement of desirable behaviors. All clients start with private lessons, and group classes are used to augment their private lesson training. Early learning is done in the least distracting environment possible, which is not offered by group classes. Group classes are seen as a secondary step, rather than a primary one. Additionally, behavior consultations are offered.

Jill Pollack and Jackie Loewe: Rendy came to the house (before we were able to join one of her training classes) and taught us what we needed to know. She is brilliant at translating what human words and actions mean to the dog and how to use that knowledge to train your pup--and build an amazing bond.

Ben, Kristen, and Lucy: Rendy has been helping us with our girl, Lucy, for over a year and we honestly don't know what we would do without her. We've attended several group classes and have learned so much under her tutelage! Lucy has made incredible progress in her obedience and knows all kinds of tricks now. Plus, it's been a great way to bond with our rescue pup! During the group classes we've taken, Rendy always provided plenty of individual attention and helped give us tips and practical strategies that were specific to Lucy's needs. She uses positive training methods which was important to us and the most effective way to shape Lucy's behaviors. In addition to the group classes, we've had a few private sessions to focus on Lucy's more difficult issues (significant separation anxiety). Rendy's extensive knowledge and experience has been key not only to Lucy's success, but to our growth as first-time dog owners. Lucy LOVES Rendy and so do we!

Heather and Lisa: It takes a village to raise a Petunia, and we're so grateful that Rendy Schwartz is part of our village! Two years ago, we adopted a sweet two year old Jack Russell Terrier rescue. Petunia came to us with severe separation anxiety and we'd been working with another trainer to no success when a friend recommended Rendy. By the time we met Rendy, we were seriously considering whether we were the right family for Petunia and we were devastated at the thought that we might have to give her back. After one session with Rendy, Petunia started making huge strides. The suggestions she made and the basic training she taught us all made a major difference and Petunia started turning the corner with her anxiety. Rendy has the most incredible, positive energy and Petunia responds to her like no one else. She provided us with incredibly clear direction and demonstration, and she put the responsibility back on us to practice and incorporate all of the training into our daily life with Petunia. She is the kind of trainer who is committed to helping you become self-sufficient as quickly as possible which was not the experience we'd had with our first trainer. Since those first private sessions, Petunia's gone on to take Rendy's basic training class where she proudly graduated at the top of her class - something we could have never imagined when she first came to us. We continue to work with Rendy in private lessons as challenges come up. Most recently, she visited us for a session to help Petunia with her on-leash behavior and response towards other dogs while walking. Again, one session and we started to see a big turnaround. Rendy's the trainer we will always call, and we couldn't recommend her more highly. She has a total gift with dogs and we're incredibly lucky to have found her.

Debra and Lewis: We have been so happy with our training experience with Rendy and Anything is Pawsible. Our family (including 2 kids) started private lessons for our Australian Shepherd puppy Lewis when he was just 8 weeks old. It was great… within just a couple of sessions, Rendy had us trained and Lewis! She patiently showed us how to teach Lewis new skills. She was great helping the kids to understand how to positively and negatively reinforce the puppy's behaviors. Every time we'd meet dog owners in the park or around the neighborhood they would comment on how well-behaved and well-trained Lewis is… they couldn't believe he was just a puppy. Now we have graduated to Rendy's Advanced Class and Lewis is doing great.

Steve, Cori and Roxie: My wife and I took our Newfoundland, Roxie, to Anything Is PAWSible for puppy classes. Initially I was adamantly opposed. Years ago a friend trained his black lab on his own. My view was I could do the same with Roxie. Puppy class seemed like a waste of time and money. Ultimately I agreed to go; though I went in with a less than positive attitude. I was dead wrong! We learned essential training skills we use every day. I cannot imagine how lost we would be had we(my wife) not found Anything Is PAWSible. We have a large breed, well over 100 pounds. What a disaster if she were not properly trained. Anything Is PAWSible is great facility with outstanding instructors. We were so happy with the first class so much we immediately enrolled in the second class. We loved the second class so much, and we were so impressed with Rendy, we immediately began home sessions with Rendy. Looking back there was no way I could have done it on my own. The best part about going through the puppy classes and working with Rendy is that I feel like I'm able to have a better, stronger relationship with my dog. I highly recommend Anything Is PAWSible. Working with Rendy, and the staff at Anything Is PAWSible, has been an excellent experience.

Mike and Stella: Stella dragged me into Anything is Pawsible in late 2008. Two families had already given up on the buoyant and arresting beauty when I adopted her at eight months. They couldn't handle her. Neither could I. Emily taught my Basic class. She gave me a method. I asked questions. She had answers. She had experience. I still remember and apply her anecdotes! Stella and I had turned the corner. Then we had Rendy for Advanced Class. I expected a star, someone with as many ways to reach a dog as fingers. She was and is. But she's just Rendy, in the best way. She built on what Emily taught: a simple, effective, and compassionate way to train your dog. She commands the class as she commands the material. SHE KNOWS DOGS. About a year later, I drove from Chicago to Yucatan, Mexico. Stella rode shotgun. My obedient and trusted companion by my side. My sweetest friend. Anything is Pawsible will open the door. The rest is up to you!

Keving and Sydney: Wow, game changer. I recently moved to the city from Iowa (think big back yard, huge dog park, quite, etc…) and my dog had some understandable anxieties. She now had no back yard, had to ride a box that brings her to floors in which people and other dogs appear, loud trains and cars… you get the point. To be completely honest, it was also me who was nervous and my dog picked up on this. I couldn't bring her to the dog park because she was unpredictable, hard time walking, and a nightmare in the elevator. I found Anything Is Pawsible on yelp, called and spoke with Rendy and we set up a private meeting with Sydney and I. The first meeting Rendy spent time meeting me and my dog and pretty much spent an hour talking about what's been going on… don't take this for a waste of time, best thing Rendy did was listen and take what she learned and help us. From the initial session, she could see that it was both me and my dog that needed to be trained. Over six sessions and an introduction to a dog daycare, she and I are much more calm and happy. My dog again now loves the dog park, say's hi to other “happy dogs” and knows how to walk away from a fight. She still pulls a bit and is slightly scared of the train (understandable haha), but overall a wonderful dog that everyone loves. I cannot recommend Rendy enough!

Nora and Tae: We could not be more grateful to have found Rendy and Anything is PAWSible! When our 1.5-year old rescue shepherd mix was recovering from a nasty illness, she started showing signs of some pretty major behavioral changes. It felt like overnight she went from a sweet, happy-go-lucky, and well-mannered pup into a tense, reactive misfit who would bark and lunge at anything and everything. Thank goodness a friend recommended Rendy! We worked with her in individual sessions as well as in group classes, and even from our very first meeting, she gave us the tools to understand and start working on Pico's unwanted behavior. Rendy approaches each session with the needs of the individual dog and handler in mind, and she is adept at reading even the most subtle signals from dog and handler alike. Needless to say, two years, many private sessions, and several group classes later, we routinely receive compliments on our dog's beautiful behavior. Rendy is always willing to address questions and concerns well beyond the day's main focus, and her sessions are filled with encouragement and enthusiasm. We've had so much fun in her classes that we've taken several of them more than once, and we continue to stay in touch whenever we have questions or just want to share the good news about Pico's continued progress. Gone are the days of dog-walks filled with frustration and scolding. Thanks to Rendy, our relationship with Pico is now one of praise, games, and affection. We feel so lucky to have found such a talented and thoughtful trainer!

Alycia and Ernie: I, along with a few of my friends, rescued Ernie, his littermate (and best friend) and their mother from unsavory characters on the South side of Chicago in the summer of 2006. Though, for 24 straight hours, I said “no” to keeping any of them, I knew I did have a connection with the little red and white puppy who was shy and needed confidence boosting. Once I made the decision to keep him, I was encouraged to take him to training classes with a woman by the name of Rendy Schwartz. Now, I had worked with dogs for several years, and had my own whom I had trained myself. However, I knew owning a Pit Bull would make me (and Ernie) a target for discrimination, so I decided to sign us up for the puppy class. Admittedly, I entered that class a little cocky since I felt I had a good handle on dog behavior, etc. But, I was truly blown away by the skills and knowledge which Rendy possessed. Needless to say, I continued to sign Ernie up for more classes after that. He completed every level of her training, even, most recently, the Therapy Dog Prep class, which he did very well in! I am still in the business of working with dogs, and I have given Rendy's name and information to MANY clients of mine, all of whom absolutely LOVE her, as well. She has such a deep understanding of dog behavior, and her style of training allows you to feel empowered, not idiotic. Ernie and I would repeat all of the classes if we could just so that we could continue working with her.

Anita and Nola: White sound machine, low lights, consistent sleep schedule. Who knew you can put your pack down for naps throughout the day - and who knew to coincide them with a baby's sleep schedule! Judit knows. Judit knows A LOT about dogs, infants, sleep schedules, preparing dogs for a baby's arrival, guests, and mommy time. But her knowledge is not limited to just babies and their dogs. She is an experienced, dog trainer, who happens to have youngsters and dogs, so hands-on experience helping families to safely and sanely onboard a new baby into your life and your dog(s) life.

Barb and Anna: Laura has been working with my coonhound, Anna, and me for the past 7 years. I cannot put into words how Laura's talent has improved our lives. Anna used to be very scared, shut down, and reactive. She trusted Laura from the very beginning. Our lessons consist of creative courses for jumping, stretching, balancing and cardio workouts tailored to Anna's needs. Laura now incorporates nosework since Anna is a huge fan. Anna knows when it's time to go see coach Laura every week and she gets so excited! I truly believe that at 13 years old, Anna is in top shape both mentally and physically, thanks to Laura's skills, patience and knowledge about working with reactive dogs. Anna and I so lucky to have Laura in our lives!

Nellie and Poppy Seed Bagel: Mario provided individualized attention to our pup in a busy group full of other energetic puppies! He has a terrific understanding of doggie group dynamics and made sure everyone was playing and interacting safely. Mario kept things fun, lighthearted, and flexible based on our class' needs. He really gets to know everyone (both humans and canines)! Plus, Poppy Seed Bagel LOVES him!

Dedicated to helping clients reach their training goals and learn from their dogs, A Lick of Truth is owned by an individual with a deep passion for positive and balanced dog training. Certified by ABCDT and with a Bachelor’s in Psychology from DePaul University, the owner brings a wealth of experience to their work.

Their interest in dog training began in childhood, inspired by their family dog, Pongo. From early on, they were involved in local dog obedience classes and spent time at home teaching Pongo various tasks and obstacles. This early experience sparked a fascination with understanding how animals interpret the world.

After college, they delved deeper into the pet industry and adopted their first dogs, Rabbit and Nugget. This experience solidified their passion for working with dogs, leading them to earn a dog obedience training certificate from Animal Behavior College in 2019. Further honing their skills, they apprenticed with Kim’s Dog Coaching, specializing in Rally and Agility training.

Having spent years working virtually with clients through an online dog training app, they have also raised their first puppy, Ember, while establishing their own business, A Lick of Truth. Thrilled at the prospect of sharing their knowledge and learning from each client’s dog, they are excited about the journey ahead. A Lick of Truth is a dream come true, and they look forward to the opportunity to teach and learn alongside their clients' dogs.

Rachel was incredibly easy to work with, very responsive, and worked with us both inside our home and out on walks. She also sent instructive videos and readings to compliment our training sessions. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for support with training." - Anonymous
  • "Rachel has been WONDERFUL - I can't say that enough. We first met with her for a 6-week, once-a-week, program at our home when first got our puppy and it was a huge help. He absolutely loved her, but most importantly - Rachel helped us learn how to keep that training going when she wasn't around. I thought I knew the basics about training a puppy but *NEWS FLASH* definitely not haha Rachel is so positive, easy to talk to and answered all our questions (even the silly ones.) Double bonus - we had an issue pop up several months after we first met; I messaged Rachel and she was very helpful. She even followed up a couple weeks later to be sure everything was ok. Three cheers!" - Anonymous
  • "For the past 5 years, since the first week we adopted our puppy, Rachel has been her trainer, walker, and literally the only person we have ever left our dog (and two cats)with to go away. I can't recommend her enough." - Anonymous
  • "Rachel from The Positive Pup is the best! She is patient, kind to our dog, and she gives practical tips and advice for us to follow through from her training sessions. Rachel is friendly and professional. She has worked with countless dogs in the building we live in over the course of many years. Rachel has a terrific track record and very positive feedback from clients, which was how we were referred to her. I really enjoy working with Rachel and would highly recommend her/The Positive Pup's services!" - Anonymous
