Training Philosophy

Maureen Ross's training philosophy is based on the idea that dogs and humans can learn and grow together in a safe, positive, and respectful environment. She believes in using gentle, positive reinforcement methods to help dogs learn new skills and behaviors. She also emphasizes the importance of building a strong bond between dogs and their humans.

Services

  • Private Training: Private training is offered in a series of 5, 1-hour weekly sessions. It is designed for puppies, adolescents, and some newly adopted dogs who need socialization and manners (SAM), and dog parents who need guidance. It is beneficial for people who prefer personalized attention.
  • Behavior Coaching: Behavior coaching is designed for dogs who have ingrained, habitual, and/or reactive behavior issues that need resolution/change/modification. It may take 2-4 sessions, a year or more of commitment. Prevention and management may be part of a continued protocol for safety.
  • Zoom Coaching: Online Canine Coaching is for those who can not take advantage of in-person coaching. It works, as does online human counseling, but there are limitations. You will need to fill out the Intake Form prior to online coaching.
  • Pet Assisted Team Training: Maureen Ross also offers private coaching for potential registered therapy teams with Pet Partners Headquarters. She has many years of experience teaching and offering Licensed Team Evaluations.

Certifications

Maureen Ross is a board certified counselor, certified professional dog trainer/behavior coach, and licensed team evaluator for Pet Partners. She is a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT), International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC), National Board of Certified Counselors, Pet Partners, Yoga Alliance, NH Non Profits, and Greater Hudson Chamber of Commerce.

Specializations

  • Awareness Centered Training (ACT): ACT is a gentle, positive reinforcement training method that helps dogs and their humans learn to communicate and understand each other better. It is based on the idea that dogs and humans can learn and grow together in a safe, positive, and respectful environment.
  • Pet Assisted Therapy: Maureen Ross is a licensed team evaluator for Pet Partners and has many years of experience training therapy dogs. She is passionate about helping dogs and their humans make a difference in the lives of others.

Training Methods

  • Clicker Training: Clicker training is a method of positive reinforcement that uses a clicker to mark desired behaviors. This helps dogs learn quickly and easily.
  • Life Rewards: Maureen Ross believes that the best rewards for dogs are those that are meaningful to them. This could include praise, petting, toys, or even just a walk in the park.
  • Desensitization: Desensitization is a process of gradually exposing dogs to things that they are afraid of or anxious about. This helps them to overcome their fears and become more confident.
  • Counter-Conditioning: Counter-conditioning is a process of pairing something that a dog is afraid of with something positive. This helps them to learn to associate the feared thing with something pleasant.

***** Ella La Dew
This is one of the best book I have had the opportunity to read and integrate into my life, and, oh yeah, Elle La Dew agrees. Training time was limited to 5-minutes 2x a day at feeding time. How easy is that? We then started to do short stops on our walks as well … just for fun! Although Ella is such an easy dog to have, she lacked focus. Well, I have to admit that it was me who lacked focus. I just wasn’t getting Ella what she needed to interact with me effectively. ACT, you could say, helped me get my ACT together in understanding that the cues come from me. I made the biggest mistake of my life in thinking some dogs are born with bad habits. They are not. All they want and need is your attention and to learn to communicate properly. After all, they don’t read minds! I urge you to grab a copy of this book and see how much you change – oh yeah Ella adds that life is much better too when I understand her cues. Pat and Ella La Dew

Awareness Centered Training – ACT takes positive dog training a step further by helping readers, like me, learn how to relax (breathe, balance energy, enjoy, and no assume I know what my dog is thinking). We can learn better as both teachers and observers instead of plowing right into training as we once understood (boring). Author Maureen Ross brings her experience as a psychologist and yoga teacher to her heart-centered (quote) and practical dog training approach which is really people training and taking US beyond the positive.

Awareness Centered Training is a great read with loads of tips and insights into training your dog in a natural, relaxed way.

Awareness Centered Training – ACT is an outstanding work from an established trainer, behaviorist and author. It well written, easy to read and understand. It lays out, in a clear an concise manner, how to find a better way to not only train your dog, but to understand the what’s and why’s behind it. Maureen’s easy writing style is full of illustrations and examples that make it a cinch to translate into action. And, the real beautify of ACT? The basic premise not only works on 4-legged critters but 2 legged ones as well.

As an author, who is passionate about dogs and pet assisted therapy too, I can honestly share that Awareness Centered Training – ACT is an educational / joyful dog training book that brings peace of mind – just as the publisher’s Press Release says. Whether you are interested in training your puppy, adopted dog or have goals of becoming a pet therapy team (like me), ACT will help you build a happy, healthy and confident relationship with your dog. Daily living and learning is Maureen’s mantra though-out ACT, and I now have this etched in my mind. Training happens while living with our dogs. Skills and tools are in the classroom – but it’s daily that our dog’s behavior is shaped. ACT helped with ah-ha moments like “simply stop and take a deep nose-to-navel breath”. We and our dogs can suffer from too much sensory overload, and ACT helps with that, but most of all, I like the way Maureen gives us choices whether we like to use our voice, a smile or a clicker … we have some say in how we train our dogs, but first, we have to get to know them. Now, I try to meet myself and my dog where we are at on any particular day rather than jamming training into a set out block of time – thanks!

Awareness Centered Training-ACT is the most helpful dog training book I have read all of the decades I have owned dogs. Each time I bring home a new puppy I feel like a first time dog owner, because each dog is an individual. ACT is written for dog owners with different levels of knowledge. I have given ACT as a gift to first time dog owners, as well as dog trainers. I also gave a copy to my Vet where ACT sits on the bookshelf in the office waiting area. JET -Joyful Easy Training helps both humans and dogs enjoy the training process while achieving desired results.

This dog training book is an easy read, chocked full of simplified & fun ways to train or re-train your dog and shape behaviors. I liked the book so much; I bought another copy for my dog loving Sister
with four dogs. What a wonderful book. Thank you!

Maureen's book, ACT, is a must read for anyone bringing a dog into their life. In today's hectic world dogs offer us a chance to give and receive unconditional love. She teaches us most importantly to read our dog's body language as they read ours. By doing this we can incorporate training into everyday life. Maureen makes it simple and uncomplicated which makes it fun for everyone. Isn't that the way it's supposed to be? The book is easy to read and always a good reference. I'm sure you will enjoy it!

We've got the answers for your questions

Who are the dog trainers listed on this page?

We have created a directory of licensed dog trainers specializing in positive reinforcement methods. These trainers are not affiliated with Dogo, and all information is gathered from publicly available sources. Each profile provides a brief overview of the trainer's experience and expertise.

How can I select the right trainer for my dog?

Start by evaluating your dog's needs and identifying your training objectives. Each trainer's profile provides insights into their areas of expertise. Match these with your dog's character and your goals to find the ideal fit.

How do I ensure these trainers are competent?

All trainers listed here are certified professionals with extensive knowledge of positive reinforcement techniques.

Why is positive reinforcement emphasized, and what is it?

Positive reinforcement centers on rewarding preferred behaviors, ensuring a pleasant learning journey for your dog. This humane approach is scientifically proven to be the most effective long-term training method, strengthening the bond between you and your pet. By consistently rewarding good behavior, your dog learns to associate actions with positive outcomes, leading to lasting improvements and a happier companion.

Are these trainers equipped to address specific behavioral problems?

Yes, they are. Our trainers are adept in basic obedience or intricate behavioral challenges. Browse their profiles to identify a trainer who specializes in the particular issues you wish to address.

How do I initiate a training program with a trainer?

Simply click on the preferred trainer's profile to access their contact details. From there, you can get in touch to discuss your requirements and set up training appointments.

How do group sessions differ from private ones?

Group sessions offer a communal setting where your dog learns general obedience alongside other dogs. In contrast, private sessions grant focused attention, making them perfect for targeted behavior modifications or individualized training agendas.

Which training techniques do these trainers abstain from?

All our trainers are committed to positive reinforcement techniques and steer clear of any harsh or punitive methods. Their primary goal is to make training a joyous journey for you and your dog.

When can I expect to see results using positive reinforcement training?

Results depend on factors like your dog's nature, the specific behaviors in question, and your training consistency. While many clients observe improvements in just a few sessions, it's crucial to be patient and persistent.

Can I attend a training session to observe before committing?

Reach out to the trainer you're interested in to discuss possibly attending a session. It's a great way to get a feel for their approach and see if it aligns with your expectations.
