Heather Dawn Moore

Heather Moore has 25 years of experience training dogs and helping owners to modify their dogs’ problem behaviors. She worked with Purely Positive Dog Training in Charleston, SC until relocating to TN. She has been a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) and Pet Professional Guild (PPG). Her own dogs have titled in AKC Rally Obedience Novice and Advanced, and earned Therapy Dog Certifications. She is an evaluator for the Canine Good Citizen Test for the AKC. She is a certified professional dog trainer, CPDT-KA and a certified fear free animal trainer. She also has seven years experience as a teacher of elementary age children. This combination of skills led her to co-found the first Kids and Dogs Camp in Charleston, SC, as well as the first training class for kids and their pet dogs in that area.
Since living in Tennessee, she has spent many hours volunteering at a local shelter helping them assess dogs and promoting them on Facebook. She has established a training program and trained staff on how to make a dog more adoptable by using positive training. She frequently offers programs for the public teaching how to train shelter dogs.
Heather is currently responsible for all dangerous dogs and potentially dangerous dog court cases in Rutherford County. Residents must complete training with her to help their dog improve their behavior.
Heather also helps several local rescue groups. She loves match making and finding the perfect dog for your family. As a mother of two teenage boys, Heather has a practical and friendly approach towards training the family dog.

Training Philosophy

Her methodology focuses on leadership, structure, and positive reinforcement. All training is gentle and humane, while also being user-friendly and efficient.

We recommend Private Lessons if you and your dog are experiencing any of the problem behaviors below. Please register for a private lesson as these are not addressed in most group classes. Some of the problem behaviors we work with include:

  • Aggressive behavior towards people (including strangers, visitors to the home, family members, infants, and children)
  • Fighting with other dogs who live in the same home
  • Reactivity towards other dogs while leashed
  • Anxiety and fear, including separation anxiety and phobias
  • Nuisance barking

Note: We do have one group class for dogs that are reactive towards people or dogs but have not bitten; if this description fits your dog, the Reactive Rover class may be an option for you. Learn more about this class or Register Now!

Group Lessons
We highly recommend taking a group class with your dog if you can commit to the time and your schedule permits! It’s a great way to get your dog out and about, around other dogs and people, and to practice around distractions in a controlled environment. However, if you can’t make a group class, we also offer private lessons and other training programs as well.
Take our quiz below so that you register for the correct course. We look forward to helping you train your dog in the setting that’s best for you both.

“When we decided to welcome a puppy into our home with an active toddler, we knew that establishing a relationship with a reputable trainer was a priority! Heather spent two weeks with our Lucie at 6 months old and provided both verbal and written feedback for us to follow. We’ve welcomed the opportunity for additional boarding and training and appreciate the daily updates and level of care and love that Heather extends to our fur baby. She’s truly a breath of fresh air!”

“People stop me all the time commenting on how well behaved Marnie is. She was a wild rambunctious puppy before taking Heather’s classes and now she is still energetic, but listens to me even when other dogs are around. Heather teaches you how to train your dog not teaching them. Highly recommend wag it better to anyone!”

We've got the answers for your questions

Who are the dog trainers listed on this page?

We have created a directory of licensed dog trainers specializing in positive reinforcement methods. These trainers are not affiliated with Dogo, and all information is gathered from publicly available sources. Each profile provides a brief overview of the trainer's experience and expertise.

How can I select the right trainer for my dog?

Start by evaluating your dog's needs and identifying your training objectives. Each trainer's profile provides insights into their areas of expertise. Match these with your dog's character and your goals to find the ideal fit.

How do I ensure these trainers are competent?

All trainers listed here are certified professionals with extensive knowledge of positive reinforcement techniques.

Why is positive reinforcement emphasized, and what is it?

Positive reinforcement centers on rewarding preferred behaviors, ensuring a pleasant learning journey for your dog. This humane approach is scientifically proven to be the most effective long-term training method, strengthening the bond between you and your pet. By consistently rewarding good behavior, your dog learns to associate actions with positive outcomes, leading to lasting improvements and a happier companion.

Are these trainers equipped to address specific behavioral problems?

Yes, they are. Our trainers are adept in basic obedience or intricate behavioral challenges. Browse their profiles to identify a trainer who specializes in the particular issues you wish to address.

How do I initiate a training program with a trainer?

Simply click on the preferred trainer's profile to access their contact details. From there, you can get in touch to discuss your requirements and set up training appointments.

How do group sessions differ from private ones?

Group sessions offer a communal setting where your dog learns general obedience alongside other dogs. In contrast, private sessions grant focused attention, making them perfect for targeted behavior modifications or individualized training agendas.

Which training techniques do these trainers abstain from?

All our trainers are committed to positive reinforcement techniques and steer clear of any harsh or punitive methods. Their primary goal is to make training a joyous journey for you and your dog.

When can I expect to see results using positive reinforcement training?

Results depend on factors like your dog's nature, the specific behaviors in question, and your training consistency. While many clients observe improvements in just a few sessions, it's crucial to be patient and persistent.

Can I attend a training session to observe before committing?

Reach out to the trainer you're interested in to discuss possibly attending a session. It's a great way to get a feel for their approach and see if it aligns with your expectations.
