Sue Engledow

United States

Sue Engledow

Sue Engledow has always had dogs in her life and cannot imagine life without them. She graduated from Purdue University with a degree in management and marketing and a master's degree in secondary education. After retiring from teaching, she decided to pursue her passion for dogs and became a dog trainer. She has been studying training methods and honing her philosophy since 1989 when she got her first dog, Duke, a black lab. She has also worked with various trainers with different viewpoints on training philosophies.

Training Philosophy

Sue believes that training should be fun for both the dog and the owner. She emphasizes communication and consistency, believing that learning to "read" your dog is vital to understanding what motivates them and how to communicate effectively. She uses positive reinforcement methods and believes that short, positive training sessions build trust and lead to a fulfilling relationship with your dog.

Services

Sue offers a variety of services, including:

  • Training Packages:
    • Golden Starts: Puppy basics package, in-home only, includes five sessions (initial consultation and four training sessions). Covers name recognition, sit, down, place, touch, stand, watch, stay, and introduction to leash walking.
    • Golden Basics: For puppies that have completed Golden Starts or older shelter dogs. Focuses on basic manners, adding distractions and duration to cues learned in Golden Starts. Includes four sessions in dog-friendly areas in the community. Covers basic obedience commands, loose leash walking, appropriate interactions with other dogs, heel, and fun tricks.
    • Golden Additions: For puppies that have graduated from Golden Starts and Golden Basics or older dogs with a similar skills base. Focuses on advanced training, adding distractions and duration to cues reinforced in Golden Basics. Includes four sessions in dog-friendly areas in the community. Covers canine good citizens skills, advanced leash work, additional fun tricks, and any behavior issues.
  • Pet Care Services:
    • Daytime Dog Visits: 20-30 minute visit to let the dog out in the yard, visit, and play. Great for puppies, older dogs, energetic dogs, dogs kept in crates, or pet owners who need to be away for long periods of time during the day.
    • Dog Walking: 30 minute leash walk. A midday walk can be a solution for dogs who are eager to play and visit after being home all day.
    • Daytime Visits / Dog Walking Plus Training: Includes short training sessions incorporated into the visit or walk. Requires the dog owner's participation periodically for consistency in learning training cues.

Sue does not offer training for dogs with aggression issues but can recommend trainers who specialize in these types of behaviors.

Certifications

Sue is a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT).

Specializations

Sue specializes in puppy training, basic obedience, and advanced training. She also has experience working with shelter dogs.

Training Methods

Sue uses positive reinforcement methods and believes in building a strong bond between the dog and owner through communication and consistency.
