Paws 4 Thought Dog Training, LLC offers Canine Nosework or scent work classes and Puppy Kindergarten classes. The trainer, with a BS and CNWI certification, uses treats for puppy and nosework classes. The training philosophy centers on teaching people to live with their dogs using positive reinforcement and gentle techniques, aiming to build a good relationship, even if these techniques may take a little longer to achieve results.
The service areas include Weld County (Erie, Firestone, Frederick) and Boulder County (Longmont, Lafayette, Boulder, Niwot) in Colorado. With 30 years of experience, the trainer enjoys working with people and pets of all ages. Classes are held at Erie Animal Hospital, Erie, CO, and at 4 Paws and Company in Longmont, CO. The classes offered are K9 Nosework Classes and puppy kindergarten (for pups 8-18 weeks of age). These classes are lure-reward based, utilizing treats and/or toys in the training. By the end of class, the dog should be working for 'life rewards' rather than just food or toys.
Nose work classes aim to teach dogs to use their natural scenting ability to locate odors, building confidence and focus. This training is reported to be enjoyable for both dogs and humans. Additionally, trials are offered for those interested in competing. Previously, the trainer worked with 4-H kids in the dog project, teaching Rally, Obedience, and Junior Showmanship. At the end of the year, the kids showcased their dogs at the Boulder County Fair and, if qualified, at the Colorado State Fair. The trainer also managed the County fair dog show and provided assistance with the State Dog show and the 4-H State Dog Committee.

Encompass Canines, LLC, was established in 2021 with the belief that dog training should be enjoyable and tailored to each individual - both human and canine.
The primary aim was to offer a secure environment for dogs and their owners to learn, develop, and play, all in a positive manner that suits their requirements.
The ultimate goal is to strengthen the bond between people and their canine companions, resulting in well-behaved partnerships.
The focus is on highlighting what each person and their dog aspire to do, and can do, through positive training techniques and atmosphere.
Those interested are encouraged to explore and experience the joy!

Lisa Torick
Lisa Torick has had dogs most of her life, as well as cats, llamas, chickens, and a variety of small mammals growing up. She became a serious student of animal behavior and training in 2001. She received her BA with a double major in Biology/Chemistry and Asian Studies. After 5 years living and studying in Japan, she came back and studied evolution and ecology in a Master’s program, culminating in a thesis about the foraging behavior of the Clark’s Nutcracker. She earned an MA. Immediately following that, her interest in evolution and birds lead her to a doctoral program in paleontology. As the reality of a life in academia began to sink in, she moved to a small farm where llamas were already residing. Knowing nothing about clicker training or llamas, she attended a workshop that specifically introduced us to clicker training llamas. She was given a copy of Karen Pryor’s book, “Don’t Shoot the Dog”, and that changed everything for her. Since then she has worked at a shelter, taught group classes, worked privately with clients, and formed her own business. Once she committed to this field of animal training and behavior, she attended dozens of learning events and webinars, including Marian and Bob Bailey’s Chicken Camp, ClickerExpo’s, APDT conferences, Aggressive Dog Conference, to name just a few.
Training Philosophy
Lisa Torick believes in using positive reinforcement methods to train dogs. She is a strong advocate for science-based training and behavior modification approaches that are positive and effective. She approaches each individual involved (whether human, dog, cat, or other) with compassion and expertise informed by decades of experience and continuing education in the science of behavior and the principles of learning.
