Erin Flynn

Erin Flynn is a certified dog trainer who has a passion for rescue canines. She has four dogs of her own: Pip, Patch, Peanut, and Ella Bean. She founded Barktastic Behavior in 2021 to bridge the communication gap between people and their dogs and to make life more enjoyable for everyone.

Training Philosophy

Erin believes in using positive reinforcement and clear communication that dogs understand. She teaches owners how to get the behavior they want without being aversive, never having to tug on a leash or yell.

Services

Barktastic Behavior offers a variety of in-person and virtual classes and packages, including:

• Puppy Start-Right Class: This six-week program covers how to prepare puppies for experiences, people, and situations they'll encounter in the outside world. It includes basic behaviors like sit, down, and settle on a mat. The cost is $250 per dog.
• Dog Foundation Skills Class: This six-week program covers how to teach dogs a wide range of behaviors, including sit, down, stay, nose-to-hand target, recall, leave it, and more. The cost is $250 per dog.
• Premier Puppy Package: This package includes a consultation with the owner(s) prior to bringing the puppy home, one-on-one training and support throughout the six-week Puppy Start Right program, and covers topics such as crate training, house training, chewing, jumping, and dog enrichment ideas. The cost is $450 per dog.
• Coaching: This package includes in-person training sessions with Erin, homework in between sessions, and can be purchased as a three-session or six-session package. The cost is $225-$450 per dog.
• Day Training: This package includes weekly in-home training sessions with Erin, where she trains the dog in a 'hands off' process. One of the sessions includes a 15-minute 'transfer' session where Erin teaches the owner what she has taught the dog that week. The cost is $450 per dog.
• Virtual Classes: These classes are offered via Zoom and are suitable for those who are not close by or who have a reactive dog. They include the Puppy Start-Right Class and the Dog Foundation Skills Class, both of which are six weeks long and cost $225 per dog.
• Virtual Packages: These packages offer three or six sessions with a focus on two to three cues or four to six behaviors, respectively. The cost is $225-$450 per dog.

I brought home a large foster dog (or a foster fail - we still have him!) & learned first-hand about fear-aggression. A difficult dog is a lot for owners to take on - I get it. If we are committed to a no-kill city, we need effective training and robust outcomes. Working at a training center, I saw owners struggle. Often we don't recognize dogs' fear; to owners, a lunging, barking dog looks aggressive, but punishment makes fear worse - so lunging and barking get worse, too. Diana is a Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Evaluator and holds classes and tests for this program several times a year. Whitney Marie Spence

Whitney has always had a love for animals. When she just started high school, her family lost their last family dog and decided to adopt a dog. This is when they adopted a Jack Russell/Black Lab mix named, Hollywood. Very quickly they realized they needed help as she was very people and dog reactive. They found a trainer and it opened Whitney's eyes to the world of dog training. She began to research how dog's minds work and how to help dogs problem solve which led her to find positive reinforcement training. She now has a strong passion for working with reactivity and misunderstood dogs. Nothing makes her happier than being able to help owners understand and build a connection with their dogs. Our dogs are always talking to us and it is up to us to acknowledge and understand. She doesn't just train the dogs, but she trains the humans too!

• Kid Dog Central: A one-week camp for kids (aged 9-13) and their dogs that includes five individually themed days (Basic skills, Tricks, Rally, Agility and Scent-work). The camp includes 5 days of camp and online Training Club access for 1 year. The price is $500.

Melody Lamis works for Austin Pets Alive! which is a non-profit rescue organization in Austin, Texas. APA! helps the city of Austin achieve its No-Kill status by pulling medical and behavior animals from the municipal shelter.

Melody has been on the Dog Behavior Team at Austin Pets Alive! since September 2018. She uses her knowledge and skills to help shelter dogs, rescues, and their humans to get dogs into homes, prevent returns, and most importantly avoid the unnecessary euthanasia of shelter dogs.

Train My Dogs Austin

Our experienced certified trainers use modern positive reinforcement techniques to teach you and your dog! Private lessons, group classes, board & train, and virtual options available.

Trust and communication Positive dog training is about teaching and reinforcing the behaviors we want our dogs to have, while pre-empting and interrupting unwanted behaviors without resorting to intimidation or physical punishment.

Positive daycare At Train My Dogs daycare, we use our years of experience to read dog body language, pair appropriate play partners, and train relevant obedience skills like come when called to maintain a safe group environment. We do not use physical punishment, squirt bottles, shaker cans, or other startle effects on your canine companions.

Karin Liebrand (CPTD-KA, KPA CTP, CTDI) uses rewards-based training to jumpstart positive communication between pet parents and their four-legged best friends giving them a valuable skillset that fosters a spirit of teamwork, collaboration and trust. She works with clients to meet their training goals in the areas of basic dog manners, advanced dog manners, new puppy training, leash reactivity and tricks.

Miranda is the Founder and Executive Director for Every Dog Behavior and Training. Every Dog is a nonprofit dedicated to providing inclusive, accessible dog training and behavior resources to the Austin, TX community (and beyond!).

Laura is a life-long dog lover, training recreationally since the age of thirteen. As an adult, she began to dive more deeply into training to address the reactive behavior that developed in her Australian Shepherd Scout, and started on the path to learning more about behavior, training, and helping other people train their dogs.

She apprenticed to a professional trainer 2003-2007, assisting in and leading pet dog training classes. She also developed an interest in dog agility and began training, competing, and then teaching dog agility classes, and serving as training director for her dog agility training club. She earned a CPDT-KA (certified professional dog trainer-knowledge assessed) in 2006.

After the birth of her son, Laura shifted focus, starting and running a successful pet sitting and dog walking business for seven years, until March 2020, when she suddenly found herself out of the pet-sitting business due to a global pandemic. Fortunately for Laura, just three months prior, she had adopted her dream dog, a border collie named Harper Lee. If Scout had been her pathfinder dog, Harper is Laura's renaissance dog.

In the quiet, isolated, first few months of 2020, Harper helped Laura rediscover the passion she had for dog training and the joy she found in it. As she emerged from her house more and more frequently to do things outside with Harper, she began to connect with people who needed help with their own dogs, and she began to reclaim her identity as a dog trainer. Laura started teaching dog training classes again in December 2020 and launched Fuzzy Matters Dog Training in February 2021. She also became an AKC-approved Canine Good Citizen Evaluator.

In 2023, she earned back her lapsed CPDT-KA and became an AKC Certified Fit Dog Instructor. Over the last two years, Laura has taught classes in CGC preparation, pet dog training, tricks, disc dog, and dog agility, as well as helped numerous clients in private training. Laura consults with the Texas State University Animal-Assisted Counseling Academy to provide support for their program participants in preparing for the CGC test and successfully completing the dog behavior aspect of the program. She also serves as training coordinator for her dog agility club.

Laura's approach to dog training is to lead with empathy and a science-, evidence-based framework to help people improve their relationships with their dogs. Laura helps clients develop realistic behavior expectations for their dogs and then realize those expectations. She likes to emphasize enrichment as the big picture and training within the context of that because a dog who has all its needs met is a better-balanced dog--emotionally, mentally, and behaviorally. By extension--their peoples' lives are also enriched. How beautiful is that? Fundamentally, Laura wants to make the world a kinder, happier, funner place through dog training.

Laura shares her life in South Austin, Texas with son Lincoln, husband JP, her three beloved dogs--Olive, Harper, and Moxzilla Cthulhu--and her two cat roommates--Astrid and Giles. Laura also still shares her heart with the dogs that shaped her: Goldie, Bear, NIkita, Caliban, Angus, Scout, Lola, and Zaphod.

Jen has been training dogs (and cats!) for over 20 years through both private training businesses and shelter/rescue organizations. She is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, a certified TTouch Practitioner I, a Canine Nutritionist, and a Pet Professional Guild Canine Training Professional. Jen holds several certificates in ethology, animal learning, and behavior from the Ethology Institute.

Jen loves all things animal behavior and has raised litters of foster puppies, helped her own dog Jules (initially her foster puppy) survive distemper and go on to thrive, and keeps a household of canine and feline companions living together in harmony and even sharing some pretty darn adorable training sessions!

Jen is currently bringing all that puppy rearing experience to Dog Possible’s PupStarts puppy class program, focusing on helping puppies and their people build the foundation skills they need to grow into happy, healthy adult dogs. Kathryn Butts specializes in nosework training in the Austin area. Her classes are fun, positive, and always focused on developing a strong working relationship between the dog and handler. By placing an emphasis on the final indication behavior, Kathryn's training techniques develop a clear line of communication between dog and handler that results in a successful partnership at trials. Kathryn is an active competitor in scent work, and she and her Scottish Terrier, Bentley, became the 5th team in UKC history to earn the Elite Nosework (EN) title. Kathryn maintains an active judging schedule for AKC Scent Work and UKC Nosework. Pet dog training and general obedience skills are offered on a case-by-case basis.

CPDT-KAs have demonstrated their expertise in the field and are committed to continuing education as part of their certification requirements.
