Erin Flynn

US

Erin Flynn

Erin Flynn is a certified dog trainer who has a passion for rescue canines. She has four dogs of her own: Pip, Patch, Peanut, and Ella Bean. She founded Barktastic Behavior in 2021 to bridge the communication gap between people and their dogs and to make life more enjoyable for everyone.

Training Philosophy

Erin believes in using positive reinforcement and clear communication that dogs understand. She teaches owners how to get the behavior they want without being aversive, never having to tug on a leash or yell.

Services

Barktastic Behavior offers a variety of in-person and virtual classes and packages, including:

  • Puppy Start-Right Class: This six-week program covers how to prepare puppies for experiences, people, and situations they'll encounter in the outside world. It includes basic behaviors like sit, down, and settle on a mat. The cost is $250 per dog.
  • Dog Foundation Skills Class: This six-week program covers how to teach dogs a wide range of behaviors, including sit, down, stay, nose-to-hand target, recall, leave it, and more. The cost is $250 per dog.
  • Premier Puppy Package: This package includes a consultation with the owner(s) prior to bringing the puppy home, one-on-one training and support throughout the six-week Puppy Start Right program, and covers topics such as crate training, house training, chewing, jumping, and dog enrichment ideas. The cost is $450 per dog.
  • Coaching: This package includes in-person training sessions with Erin, homework in between sessions, and can be purchased as a three-session or six-session package. The cost is $225-$450 per dog.
  • Day Training: This package includes weekly in-home training sessions with Erin, where she trains the dog in a 'hands off' process. One of the sessions includes a 15-minute 'transfer' session where Erin teaches the owner what she has taught the dog that week. The cost is $450 per dog.
  • Virtual Classes: These classes are offered via Zoom and are suitable for those who are not close by or who have a reactive dog. They include the Puppy Start-Right Class and the Dog Foundation Skills Class, both of which are six weeks long and cost $225 per dog.
  • Virtual Packages: These packages offer three or six sessions with a focus on two to three cues or four to six behaviors, respectively. The cost is $225-$450 per dog.

Certifications

Erin is certified from the Karen Pryor Academy as a clicker dog trainer.

Specializations

Erin specializes in dog anxiety and has worked with dogs who have PTSD. She also has experience with puppy training, obedience training, and socialization.

Training Methods

Erin uses positive reinforcement and clicker training methods.

Customer Reviews

  • Deb Johnson: I've had previous experience with trainers who use pinch collars and minimal treats - not much positive reinforcement. Erin listens to your issues and identifies easy training solutions that are positive and helpful and really work for you and your dog.
  • Heather Dawson: I love Barktastic's 'What to expect' handbooks on chewing, house training, and socialization. You get very specific help.
  • Kelly Thoemke: We connected with Erin because we needed to know how to get Oakley's attention and that he'd come when called. In her first encounter with him, she bent down, said his name, and he went right to her. There's something very calming about her.
  • Deb Johnson: Erin gave us the confidence and tools to work with Joey to make him a better dog - and us better owners.
  • Jane Pfaller, Waushara County Animal Shelter: When Rocky was having some pottying issues, Erin taught him to pee on cue. I saw a difference in only two weeks.
  • Heather Dawson: Working with Erin has reduced my stress level so much because I know what I'm doing. I'm a first-time puppy owner who's come to understand how to read his body language and signals. It makes a huge difference.

Customer Reviews
Here are some customer reviews and testimonials:

  • George and Donna Ferrie & Joplin: “The best thing about working with Maida is her compassion for dogs and owners. She’s very patient, willing to try different techniques and adapt to unique situations.”
  • Kristy Marsillo & Guinness: “My dog walks well on the leash, listens better and is overall happier and calmer and barks less at the fence. [We found] ways to communicate well with my dog while maintaining a loving healthy bond.”
  • Aaron Grabein & Ulysses: “Uli has really become a nice, mellow puppy. It was noticed after the first class. Very happy/thankful.”
  • Janet Fowler & Ranger and Vivee: “Maida listens! She listens to you and she listens to the dogs. Maida spends time talking to you. She listens to your concerns, asks questions, and provides you with information drawn from a wide breadth of knowledge and experience. But not only does she address the human, she is constantly aware of the dog and what she/he is saying, interpreting the canine communication to the human! I also enjoyed her calm, relaxed, yet authoritative presence. Just a pleasure!!”
  • Paula Gordon & Duke: “Maida has excellent insight to dog behavior and demonstrated compassion to my problem with my dog’s behavior toward my cats. She helped ease my anxieties as we worked on the steps toward improving the situation between my pets.”
  • Lucy W. & Chocco and Petunia: “Maida really knows how dogs respond and learn, and she is patient with them (and with the owner) in training. I liked that she would tell you why certain things work better than others. And when you are getting training in your home, she can look around and help with the problems you may have, such as when the dogs go crazy when they hear someone at the front door.”
  • Ramon and Maria Arizpe & Pumkin: “Very informative and friendly. The pace of the class was perfect. It allowed for everyone to achieve their goals. Everything was awesome.”
  • Chip Senkbeil & Pepper: “Maida was very patient, provided corrections to dogs (and trainers!) calmly with detail.”
  • Joolie Bracken & Willa: “The tools Maida gave us to work with Willa ended up being just as valuable as the training itself. Maida is funny, focused, and interested in a good outcome for both the dog and the owners.”
  • Michaela Burgman & Tank: “We can never thank you enough for your extraordinary care and concern for our baby, Tank. Your knowledge and skills with dogs is a special gift.”

Job Title: Trainer, Behavior Consultant

Training Philosophy: Improving the lives of dogs and inspiring the people who love them.

I use science-based, force-free, positive reinforcement-based dog training methods because I want you to enjoy an amazing relationship with your dog based on love and trust. Positive Reinforcement training works by creating, practicing, and reinforcing the behavior we want from our dogs. The more we reinforce behavior, the more likely it is to occur again! We will never use or recommend aversive or “balanced” training methods or tools – anything that uses fear, pain, shock, choking, prongs, intimidation, or physical force - these are not healthy or humane ways to train. Don’t be fooled by companies who offer you a “quick fix” & a shock collar – aversive methods have long-lasting negative effects on your dog, on your relationship, and have been shown to increase fearful, anxious, reactive, and aggressive behavior. Let me show you the best and most effective way to train!

The Canine Center for Training and Behavior

The Canine Center’s unique training methodology is the culmination and refinement of a combined 75 years of experience and successful application to over 16,000 dogs and clients. Our methods are free from pain, intimidation, and fear, relying instead on developing your dog’s behavior through reward, praise, trust and balanced relationships.

We are a dog training and behavior center of excellence that is often preferred and recommended by veterinarians, rescue organizations, as well as other dog training professionals.

Our philosophy and mission are quite simple. We want to help you enjoy life with your dog. Dogs are bred to be companions for humans, so naturally they thrive on human connection. We believe that by creating a relationship founded on trust is key to a successful dog/owner partnership.

Located on 14-acres of natural Texas land, our facility creates the absolute best learning environment for you and your dog. We are equipped with 8 dedicated outdoor training fields (including our covered event/class field and four loaded agility courses) over a mile of onsite hiking trails and a wet weather creek. We have all the right resources to ensure your dog is set up for success all while learning the right kinds of behavior.

Job Title: trainer

PhD, CTC, CBCC-KAWhile volunteering at Austin Animal Center, I met dog-reactive dogs, human-reactive dogs, puppies of all kinds, pushy adolescents, fear-biters. I brought home a large foster dog (or a foster fail - we still have him!) & learned first-hand about fear-aggression. A difficult dog is a lot for owners to take on - I get it. If we are committed to a no-kill city, we need effective training and robust outcomes. Working at a training center, I saw owners struggle. Often we don't recognize dogs' fear; to owners, a lunging, barking dog looks aggressive, but punishment makes fear worse - so lunging and barking get worse, too. Competent reward-based training can be a life-saver. I am an honors graduate of Jean Donaldson's Academy for Dog Trainers, a two-year program in evidence-based dog behavior, training, teaching and behavior counseling. My poodle Maggie and I graduated as a Divine Canines therapy team in February 2022, and we're now working toward Maggie's 'Excellent' therapy dog title.

I just boarded her for the first time this weekend - when I picked her up she was tired - which means happy! Thank you for taking such good care of my girl Sydney!”

No matter the type of dog, Diana can reach them and get on their wavelength for training. I have also made extensive use of the daycare and boarding facilities. I've been very satisfied with those services as well. I would recommend Hearts and Paws to any of my friends with dogs!

Cynthia
“We absolutely love Hearts and Paws. My daughter attended camp there last summer and begged to go back -- so she wound up there for three weeks, and they were three of the best weeks of summer ever. Our Lab came out much improved in terms of obedience, and the bond between my daughter and Lab is very real. Everyone there is very caring. “

Renée
“Bella and Harry (the very bad dog) both enjoyed camp at Hearts and Paws so much. Bella says it was her favorite camp ever, and we have to admit both her and the dog learned a lot. We never thought that little dig with a bad attitude would be such a champ at being trained. And teachable. Not sure which one learned more. Great job with communication as well. We will be back for many summers to come!”

Whitney Marie Spence

Whitney Marie Spence

Whitney has always had a love for animals. When she just started high school, her family lost their last family dog and decided to adopt a dog. This is when they adopted a Jack Russell/Black Lab mix named, Hollywood. Very quickly they realized they needed help as she was very people and dog reactive. They found a trainer and it opened Whitney's eyes to the world of dog training. She began to research how dog's minds work and how to help dogs problem solve which led her to find positive reinforcement training. She now has a strong passion for working with reactivity and misunderstood dogs. Nothing makes her happier than being able to help owners understand and build a connection with their dogs. Our dogs are always talking to us and it is up to us to acknowledge and understand. She doesn't just train the dogs, but she trains the humans too!

Whitney began training professionally in 2015. She is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer- Knowledge Assessed and an AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. She continues going to conferences and attending virtual lectures to continue growing in the ever evolving science-based training. Whitney has a Border Collie mix, Kimchi, and a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Soju.

Training Philosophy

Whitney uses the most up-to-date, science-based, positive reinforcement training. She uses food while training as it is the most powerful motivating reinforcement and she can do multiple repetitions quickly using food. She also uses play and praise; whatever is the most reinforcing for your dog.

Laura A. Fennell

United States

Laura is a life-long dog lover, training recreationally since the age of thirteen. As an adult, she began to dive more deeply into training to address the reactive behavior that developed in her Australian Shepherd Scout, and started on the path to learning more about behavior, training, and helping other people train their dogs.

She apprenticed to a professional trainer 2003-2007, assisting in and leading pet dog training classes. She also developed an interest in dog agility and began training, competing, and then teaching dog agility classes, and serving as training director for her dog agility training club. She earned a CPDT-KA (certified professional dog trainer-knowledge assessed) in 2006.

After the birth of her son, Laura shifted focus, starting and running a successful pet sitting and dog walking business for seven years, until March 2020, when she suddenly found herself out of the pet-sitting business due to a global pandemic. Fortunately for Laura, just three months prior, she had adopted her dream dog, a border collie named Harper Lee. If Scout had been her pathfinder dog, Harper is Laura's renaissance dog.

In the quiet, isolated, first few months of 2020, Harper helped Laura rediscover the passion she had for dog training and the joy she found in it. As she emerged from her house more and more frequently to do things outside with Harper, she began to connect with people who needed help with their own dogs, and she began to reclaim her identity as a dog trainer. Laura started teaching dog training classes again in December 2020 and launched Fuzzy Matters Dog Training in February 2021. She also became an AKC-approved Canine Good Citizen Evaluator.

In 2023, she earned back her lapsed CPDT-KA and became an AKC Certified Fit Dog Instructor. Over the last two years, Laura has taught classes in CGC preparation, pet dog training, tricks, disc dog, and dog agility, as well as helped numerous clients in private training. Laura consults with the Texas State University Animal-Assisted Counseling Academy to provide support for their program participants in preparing for the CGC test and successfully completing the dog behavior aspect of the program. She also serves as training coordinator for her dog agility club.

Laura's approach to dog training is to lead with empathy and a science-, evidence-based framework to help people improve their relationships with their dogs. Laura helps clients develop realistic behavior expectations for their dogs and then realize those expectations. She likes to emphasize enrichment as the big picture and training within the context of that because a dog who has all its needs met is a better-balanced dog--emotionally, mentally, and behaviorally. By extension--their peoples' lives are also enriched. How beautiful is that? Fundamentally, Laura wants to make the world a kinder, happier, funner place through dog training.

Laura shares her life in South Austin, Texas with son Lincoln, husband JP, her three beloved dogs--Olive, Harper, and Moxzilla Cthulhu--and her two cat roommates--Astrid and Giles. Laura also still shares her heart with the dogs that shaped her: Goldie, Bear, NIkita, Caliban, Angus, Scout, Lola, and Zaphod.
