Kate has been working in the animal care field since 1996. She started as a teenager working at boarding kennels, then dog daycares, and veterinary hospitals. This led her to dog training. She began as an apprentice in 2007 under two experienced women and learned positive reinforcement methods and techniques. She started teaching her own puppy and beginner obedience classes shortly after. In 2012, she began training at a boarding kennel that offered board and train programs and classes focusing on reward-based training. She became the training manager there and in 2014 she met the requirements to become a certified professional dog trainer through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers.
